In the summer of 2006, leaders in Corsica, SD invited Jim Beddow and his team from The Rural Learning Center in Howard, SD to visit with them about Corsica’s future. During early meetings with the RLC, Corsica area leaders shared that while they currently have a number of proactive groups doing good work, the dependence on a totally volunteer-led community development effort posed a number of challenges, including:
- Sharing Information
- Common Direction
- Time & Project Management
- Community Engagement
The City Council, Commercial Club and Economic Development Corporation in Corsica teamed up to hire the RLC team to begin a discovery process. In order to really help Corsica design it’s future, the RLC team needed to understand and appreciate the community’s past, how things work, and who gets things done today. After over 80 one-on-one interviews with members of the Corsica community, the RLC and Corsica residents are working to launch a community-wide visioning process.
